Twilight Radiance | Ethiopian 14.2 ct Dark Opal
Ethiopian Dark Welo Opal | Mezezo Origin
Sourced in 2024 from the renowned Mezezo Opal Region in the North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region of Ethiopia, this opal is the result of a carefully commissioned mining project. During extraction, a large deposit was uncovered, yet only a select few pieces met our strictest standards of excellence.
From this rare find, we chose this exceptional gem—distinguished by its darker body tone, which creates a striking contrast and allows the vivid fireplay to shine with unmatched brilliance. Each gem underwent rigorous evaluation for clarity, fire intensity, and the uniqueness of its color-play patterns, and this opal represents the very best.
Expertly fashioned into a graceful pear cabochon, it reveals exceptional clarity and a refined polish. The upper dome radiates with a powerful, dynamic play of color, while the base offers a softer glow—lending depth and dimensional beauty to the stone

Gemstone Cutting Style Highlights:
Why the Pear shape ?
-
Maximizing Play-of-Color
-
Opal is valued primarily for its play-of-color. A domed cabochon allows light to enter at multiple angles, reflecting the full spectrum of colors back to the viewer. Faceting would break up or diminish this effect.
-
-
Preserving Fragile Material
-
Opal is relatively soft (Mohs 5.5–6.5) and brittle, prone to chipping. A cabochon cut removes sharp edges and corners, reducing stress points and enhancing durability.
-
-
Pear Shape as the Optimal Yield
-
Rough opal nodules and seams often have irregular, elongated shapes. A pear cut efficiently follows the natural outline of the rough, minimizing wastage while maintaining symmetry.
-
-
Highlighting Center Fire
-
The rounded end of a pear cut acts as a “color pool” that concentrates brilliance, while the taper draws the eye and elongates the appearance—making the stone look larger and more elegant.
-
-
Aesthetic & Market Preference
-
The pear cabochon is timeless in jewelry design: it flatters both rings and pendants, gives versatility in orientation (point up, down, or sideways), and is highly sought after in the global opal market.
